 How Car Fuses Work

Car fuses are safety devices designed to protect your vehicle’s electrical system from damage caused by excess current. When the current flowing through the fuse exceeds its rated capacity, the fuse blows, breaking the circuit and preventing electrical damage.

Automotive fuses are used in circuits with voltages up to 32V, and some are rated for 42V systems. These fuses are located in fuse boxes, commonly under the hood or near the steering column. Some special fuses, like the Ignition Off Draw (IOD) fuse, protect the battery from draining when the vehicle is turned off for extended periods.

Fuses may be single-use or come as resettable circuit breakers that can be manually switched back on after an overload.
